Competitive Intelligence with OutFoxer

Track what people say about your competitors in real time. OutFoxer, MentionFox's competitive analysis module, compares your share of voice, sentiment, and platform presence against any number of competitors so you always know where you stand.

The Problem

Understanding your competitive landscape is essential but traditionally expensive and slow. Market research firms charge thousands of dollars for quarterly reports that are outdated by the time they arrive. Manual competitor tracking means checking their social profiles, reading reviews, and monitoring their product updates one by one. This approach does not scale, misses organic conversations about competitors, and provides no quantitative data to support strategic decisions.

Even worse, you are blind to the conversations happening between your competitors and their users. When someone publicly complains about a competitor's pricing change, or when a competitor launches a feature that directly addresses your differentiator, you need to know immediately. Without automated competitive intelligence, these signals get buried in the noise of the internet.

How MentionFox Solves It

OutFoxer is a built-in competitive intelligence module within MentionFox. You add competitor names alongside your own brand, and OutFoxer automatically generates side-by-side comparisons of mention volume, sentiment distribution, platform mix, and trending topics. It surfaces moments when competitors face backlash, launch new products, or lose share of voice, giving you actionable intelligence to inform product, marketing, and sales strategy.

Step-by-Step Workflow

Step 1 — Add Competitors to OutFoxer

Navigate to the OutFoxer tab in your MentionFox project and add each competitor by name. For each competitor, include their brand name, product names, website domain, social handles, and any common nicknames or abbreviations their community uses.

# Competitor A
"CompetitorA" OR "Competitor A" OR "competitora.com" OR "@competitorA"

# Competitor B
"CompetitorB" OR "CompetitorB Pro" OR "competitorb.io"

# Competitor C
"CompetitorC" OR "Comp-C" OR "competitorc.app"

Pro tip: Track up to 10 competitors at once for a comprehensive market view. Even indirect competitors and emerging startups in your space deserve a tracking slot. The earlier you spot a rising challenger, the more time you have to respond strategically.

Step 2 — Configure Share of Voice Tracking

OutFoxer calculates share of voice by measuring each brand's mention volume as a percentage of total mentions across all tracked brands. Enable the share of voice dashboard to see a live pie chart and trendline. You can filter by platform, time period, and sentiment to understand not just who is talked about most, but where and in what context.

Share of Voice Dashboard

The share of voice metric shows your brand's portion of the total conversation in your competitive set. A rising share of voice indicates growing awareness, while a declining share signals that competitors are capturing more mindshare. OutFoxer breaks this down by platform so you can see if you are winning on Reddit but losing on LinkedIn, for example.

Step 3 — Set Up Competitor Alert Rules

Create alerts for specific competitor events. Examples include: alert when a competitor's negative sentiment spikes above 40% (indicating a potential crisis you can capitalize on), alert when a competitor is mentioned alongside words like "launch," "new feature," or "update" (indicating a product release), and alert when someone publicly states they are switching from a competitor to another solution.

"CompetitorA" AND ("switching from" OR "leaving" OR "cancelling")
"CompetitorB" AND ("new feature" OR "just launched" OR "announcement")
"CompetitorC" AND ("down" OR "outage" OR "broken" OR "bug")

Competitor Event Detection

OutFoxer uses pattern matching and NLP to automatically detect significant competitor events: product launches, pricing changes, outages, executive departures, funding rounds, and public controversies. Each event is tagged and summarized in a timeline view, so you can reconstruct your competitor's year at a glance.

Step 4 — Analyze Sentiment Comparisons

The sentiment comparison chart shows your brand's sentiment distribution alongside each competitor. Identify areas where competitors have lower satisfaction and use those insights in your marketing messaging. If Competitor A consistently receives negative mentions about customer support, your marketing team can emphasize your support quality in campaigns targeting their audience.

Step 5 — Generate Competitive Reports

Export weekly or monthly competitive intelligence reports as PDF or CSV. These reports include share of voice trends, sentiment comparisons, top mentions for each competitor, and a summary of detected events. Share these with leadership, product teams, and sales to ensure everyone operates with the same market awareness.

Pro tip: Share competitor complaint threads directly with your sales team. When a prospect mentions frustration with a competitor, having that context lets your rep tailor their pitch to address the exact pain point the prospect already expressed publicly.
